But, I just want to add something else. Every time fashion week comes around the corner, I always look through the showcards religiously, because it lets me peek into the lives of casting directors. Not only that, it also lets me know which models are given the green light by their agency, while others are held back. So, this season, my bets are on Patricia to be everywhere she needs to be.
Unless she pulls a Sigird of course, which is highly unlikely.
3. Lindsey Wixson
Sometimes, there comes a time when you look at a model, and then scratch your head. After a while, then you realise the potential that she has. Then, she surprises you with the work that she’s gotten. And then you start to love her. Is it possible to love the uniqueness of a look, but not necessarily love a model at first sight? I think it is, because that’s the case with Lindsey. The hype surrounding her didn’t help much, and what’s more with a lacklustre New York showing. And then, Milan came, and she was the first girl out at Prada – no mean feat considering Miuccia cut girls right on the spot. Paris came and Miu Miu was closed by the same girl. Both times she was an exclusive for the brand.
Sure, Lindsey’s look is different, but that’s what makes the industry evolve. Critics bash her for looking out 0f this world, and wish for her to be more normal looking. At the same time, they bash the generic Russians who look as if they were manufactured in Soviet factories. Sometimes, it’s unfair for a teenage girl to be scorned for the way she looks. Of course it happens in high school, but such a case is different when you’ve got the whole world trying to bring you down. But with Lindsey’s charm and winsome personality(at least according to tfs posters), I’m sure she’ll be in the industry for quite some time.
2. Jacquelyn Jablonski
There are certain models that you notice, but at the same time, don’t notice at all. Jacquelyn, for me, is one of those models. She was a finalist at the Ford Supermodel of the World, the year that Hyoni Kang won, and was one of the runners-up. Unlike Kendra Spears, who was scouted via Myspace, Jacquelyn was a child of Ford, waiting to be given the go-ahead to plunge straight into the business. An when she did, oh boy did she create a splash!
Her first season was quiet, and despite getting the Calvin Klein Accessories Campaign with Sean Opry, no one really noticed her. Then, S/S 2010 came and the rest is history. Despite some random runway appearances, Jacquelyn still managed to gain the eye of major casting directors, leading to her being booked for Prada, Valentino and Dolce Gabbana. Jacquelyn also managed to convert her runway bookings to editorial appearances, and ultimately advertisment campaigns.
I will be dedicating the next few posts of mine to new girls, who I really believe will be in this business for quite a while. Not that I’m an expert, but judging from the kind of work they have been getting, it’s safe to assume that they’ve made thier mark in the fashion industry.
1. Patricia Van Der Vliet
If you’re familiar with this blog, you’d probably remember me raving about her during fashion week. I love her look, which is a classically regal beauty on couture mode 24/7. And who doesn’t love a success story right? She managed to overcome the stigma of being on a Top Model franchise, and has managed to get a list of credible, if not awesome work.
When Meisel books you for a shoot for Vogue Italia, you count yourself blessed. When Vogue UK decides to book you for a spring editorial preview, you thank your lucky stars. When Vogue China decides to book you for a shoot, you silently pray to god. And when Balenciaga comes knocking, you shout “HALLELUJAH, I’VE MADE IT!”
Absolute newbie at Elite Paris that her stats are not even known yet. I really dig her look, which surprises me because it’s really different than the type of models that I usually prefer (if you’ve been following this blog, it’s redheads). She has a fragility that intirgues me, but at the same times, possesses this masculine composure that saves her from being boring.
And I realise another thing about her, one that I had not realised before! She has an absolute elfin quality about her, which reminds me of Lord of The Rings. God knows the only thing that kept me from falling asleep were the elves, which brings me to my overt obsession of the perfect woman, Cate Blanchett, something my Literatue classmates has been hounding me for months now. Anyways Nastya is so new that the only work she’s done is a killer editorial for Harpers Bazaar Ukraine.
Since it’s a new year, I’d thought I’d write about some of the models that have always been my favourites, from when I started to delve deeper into fashion, up until now. Some of them may not be as active now as they were before, but regardless, they’ve made me shift my focus from just looking at them to trying to find out who’s the designer behind the clothes they’re wearing. So, the list of models have been narrowed down to just 3!
